Markwayne Mullin is a Republican U.S. Senator from Oklahoma, first elected in 2022 after serving in the House of Representatives. On March 5, 2026, Trump announced that Mullin would replace Noem as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. The Senate confirmed Mullin on March 23, 2026, and he was sworn in on March 24, 2026, ahead of Noem’s stated last day of March 31, 2026.
As Secretary, Mullin inherits the department’s anti-trans policies implemented under Noem, including the TSA pat-down restrictions, the ICE rollback of transgender care in detention, and the USCIS revocation of the “X” gender marker.
