For Women Scotland is a UK campaign group that primarily focuses on opposing trans rights under the framing of “sex-based rights.” It is best known for its successful Supreme Court challenge that redefined how “sex” is interpreted in the Equality Act 2010.
For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers was the landmark case that resulted in the UK Supreme Court ruling that “sex” as defined in the Equality Act 2010 relates to a person’s biological sex and not their acquired gender, regardless of whether a trans person possesses a Gender Recognition Certificate.
The ruling overturned how the law had been understood for over a decade and has led to controversial new guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC). Amnesty International’s July 2026 report cited this ruling as one of the key factors in the UK’s fall from 1st to 22nd place in the ILGA-Europe rankings for LGBTI+ rights.
In July 2026, Amnesty International UK formally listed For Women Scotland among 51 gender-critical organizations designated as “anti-rights” in its report A Growing Threat: The Anti-Rights Movement in the UK.[1] The report maps 117 organizations in the UK’s anti-rights ecosystem, finding over 60% have emerged since 2017 and that 37 of them spent over £144 million between 2019 and 2024.
